The Gas Station was the first building I was tasked with for Virtual Battlegrounds for CyberDreamVR back in 2018. This was when the game was still early in development and needed structures to fill and populate the main world. The theming of the world is post apocalyptic where everything has been aged a fair amount. Given that VBG is a Battle Royale game and in VR, there are limitations as to what can and cannot be built for the artists and designers.
This Gas Station has gone under a handful of iterations from the original whitebox back in 2018 and has recently gone under a small revamp for the props but the structure has been the same since I built it.
Due to this building being my first since graduating from school, I underestimated the importance of references and taking inspiration from current real world examples. I had the impression so much had to be off the top of my head back then. The interior was the bigger challenge for this building and went under a fair amount of changes before turning into what it is above. The spacing of the shelving and capturing the feel of players stepping into a convenience store was difficult to attain but gaining feedback and using references helped achieve the appropriate vision.
Since initially detailed about the theming of the world I immediately had the thought process of anything and everything that I build from here on has some level of either destruction or disorder. This being the first building I've done in Unity with ProBuilder, it was a challenge on learning the tool proper and seeing what I can do with my knowledge of structure construction and keeping true how these would realistically be. For example, the walls being broken through akin to bricks whereas the roof is more like chunks and shards.
